Those who have only recently begun watching or listening to the “Finding MH370” podcast may not know that the show originated in 2023 as a collaboration between me, Jeff Wise, and Milwaukee-based entrepreneur Andy Tarnoff. Neither of us had done a podcast before, so like many other newcomers to the genre we simply had to figure it out as we went. Ultimately, we produced 31 episodes of the show we called “Deep Dive: MH370.” When we parted ways in early 2024, Andy retained exclusive control of the YouTube channel that we had built together. No longer having any access to the channel and its subscribers, I began again with my own channel.
The rebirth of the podcast as “Finding MH370” has been challenging but intensely rewarding and fun, and I look forward to covering the new ground that lies ahead. At the same time, I think that there are newcomers to the podcast who might find value in the original season. Since the production quality of many of those first-season episodes was not what we later came to achieve — especially in the first two, which weer audio only — I decided to partially remake them, with new material grafted onto the core of the original.
In Episode 1, I lay out my own experience with the case and lay out the methodical, expert-based approach that this podcast will follow in attempting to solve the mystery of Malaysian Airlines flight 370. The show’s first guest is Peter Waring, who was a lieutenant in the Australian Navy in 2014 and participated in the search for the wreckage of MH370 with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. I discuss how best to approach this unsolved case, laying out the journalistic and scientific methods that will be used to peel away the layers of the onion in each upcoming podcast episode.
